Translational Health Sciences operates within Bristol Medical School, with faculty and students working across top-tier research and clinical facilities throughout the city. These include the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead Hospital, and the cutting-edge laboratories in the Dorothy Hodgkin Building. The school conducts laboratory investigations, translational studies, and applied research, promoting strong partnerships between researchers and students. It brings together basic scientists and clinical specialists, facilitating collaborative translational and healthcare research that employs diverse methodologies ranging from molecular biology to population health studies.
Our research emphasizes clinical investigations, with many projects progressing to school-led clinical trials. Current trial areas include:
heart surgery procedures
inflammatory eye conditions
pediatric immunization and antimicrobial treatments
weight management strategies for children and adults
diabetic nerve damage therapies
early-stage Alzheimer's interventions
surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease
immune-based and stem cell therapies for multiple sclerosis
approaches to neonatal brain injury treatment
type 1 diabetes prevention methods
enhancing joint replacement results
innovative steroid treatments for critical care and inflammatory conditions
kidney disorder therapies
pleural disease management.
These research initiatives are supported by translational clinical studies involving both medical and basic science researchers. Our broad network of national and international partnerships with industry and academic institutions creates an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research and education.
