The School of Modern Languages excels in translation studies research, with key focus areas encompassing: audiovisual translation, translation technologies (particularly machine translation), media accessibility, historical translation studies, literary translation (covering poetry, drama, fiction, and practice-based research), adaptation studies, and institutional/societal perceptions of translation. Research spans multiple languages including Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
Our translation research initiatives are enhanced through partnerships with leading organizations such as the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and the Association of Programmes in Translation and Interpreting Studies (APTIS). The University's Penguin Archive and Theatre Collection provide valuable resources for studying translation in publishing and performance. Additionally, the School is equipped with specialized tools including a Tobii eye tracker and iMotions software for screen studies and translation process analysis.
We invite prospective students to explore customized research opportunities at both master's and doctoral levels across these disciplines. Our postgraduate community thrives within a supportive academic environment that promotes professional development. Students are encouraged to present at departmental seminars, university-wide events, and international conferences, with funding available for research travel and conference participation. The program also offers comprehensive training in academic skills, including teaching methodologies.
The School's research infrastructure facilitates cross-disciplinary cooperation through seminars and specialized facilities like the Multimedia Center, which features a language lab, media production suite, foreign film library, international periodicals collection, and a dedicated 18-seat screening room.
