The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology employs a globally recognized 'four-field' methodology, integrating archaeology with evolutionary, social, and linguistic anthropology. Our core expertise lies in unified perspectives for examining cultural, biological, and social diversity and transformation. We emphasize adaptation, resilience, and globalization processes. Key research areas encompass 'Ecologies', 'Sustainable Futures', 'Transformations and Disruptions', and 'Networks and Methodologies'.
Our investigations cover periods from ancient prehistory to contemporary times. Field studies are conducted across the UK and internationally, including locations like Bhutan, Brazil, China, Colombia, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, and Venezuela.
We possess state-of-the-art facilities for anthropological and archaeological field studies, including excavation capabilities, alongside world-leading radiocarbon dating, isotopic analysis, and micro-imaging laboratories. We actively collaborate with national and local professional organizations to enhance student opportunities (such as partnerships with the Royal Anthropological Institute Ethnographic Film Festival, UNESCO City of Film, and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery).
Furthermore, we leverage interdisciplinary resources and knowledge from across the University (including the Brigstow Institute, Cabot Institute for the Environment, Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research, and Jean Golding Institute). We maintain strong ties with institutes in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Law (Migration Mobilities Bristol, the Centre for Environmental Humanities, and the Centre for Health, Humanities and Science), as well as the Faculty of Science (Bristol Isotope Group and Organic Geochemistry Unit).
