Our department boasts an extensive array of research specialties, covering archaeological studies across Britain, Europe, West Asia, Egypt, North Africa, South Asia, and East Asia. Our work spans from the Paleolithic era to modern times, examining everything from ancient human remains to symbolic imagery, while advancing both scientific techniques and theoretical approaches. This diverse research environment thrives through active, interdisciplinary Research and Impact Groups that encourage collaboration.
We provide specialized research supervision for MA, MSc by Research (also known as MRes), MPhil, and PhD programs, available through full-time or part-time study. Durham University offers exceptional library resources, and our postgraduate researchers benefit from regular departmental meetings and access to numerous interdisciplinary research centers. PhD candidates can choose between a conventional 100,000-word dissertation (maximum) or a compilation of published works.
MA/MSc by Research: This one-year full-time or two-year part-time program involves research and writing, with an additional six months for completion, culminating in a 50,000-word dissertation. Typically focused on a particular artifact, location, or phenomenon, this program can serve as a pathway to advanced research (MPhil or PhD) for students who show strong potential. Applicants should possess relevant qualifications, demonstrate research skills, and develop a solid project proposal with a departmental supervisor before applying.
