Translation involves people just as much as it involves texts. Through their work, translators become agents of change. Our online MA Translation program helps you discover your unique voice as a translator, master translation technologies, examine ethical considerations with clients and peers, and build entrepreneurial skills. Available in French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese, the program focuses on translating these languages into English. Students are encouraged to study multiple languages.
This MA Translation program is part of an elite group of global programs officially recognized by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), which praises it as:
'A curriculum deeply rooted in both academic and professional environments, offering outstanding preparation for linguists pursuing a translation career. By addressing current practices, emerging trends, and future language needs, the program anticipates shifts in the translation field that will impact aspiring professionals. Students can trust they'll graduate with the practical skills and knowledge required to enter the translation industry fully prepared.'
The program also holds corporate membership with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).
In this online program, learning occurs primarily through asynchronous, interactive seminars led by experts in language studies, CAT tools, machine translation, subtitling, multilingualism, poetry, theory, translation services, and video game localization and accessibility. Many instructors bring extensive industry experience, continuing to work as translators while teaching. Our digital library provides extensive access to e-books and journals on translation.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds—some are recent graduates, while others have professional experience in language-related fields or other industries seeking a career shift. The asynchronous format particularly benefits those balancing studies with family or work obligations.
Alongside core asynchronous coursework, academic and personal tutors offer optional live sessions, and students can connect through a virtual common room. We host an annual series of online talks and seminars. While campus visits aren't required, you're fully recognized as a university member, and we'd be thrilled to welcome you to Bristol should you wish to visit.
