This program merges Music studies with French, a language spoken by hundreds of millions globally. The curriculum provides a stimulating journey with intellectual rigor and diverse elective choices to tailor to your passions.
The Music component covers extensive coursework in musicology, composition, and performance across various styles. These are enhanced by weekly concerts, masterclasses, departmental performances, and engagement with Bristol's vibrant music community. The department boasts international academic recognition while maintaining a warm, collaborative atmosphere where faculty often perform alongside students.
For French, you'll undertake structured language training while delving into Francophone culture through literature, film, history, philosophy, politics, linguistics, and visual arts. Your third year includes immersion in a French-speaking country to deepen linguistic and cultural understanding.
Both departments foster strong research-teaching connections and offer dynamic performance opportunities in music, creating an intellectually stimulating environment where cutting-edge research informs instruction.
Instruction occurs through various formats: lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, and individual supervision. Evaluation methods span presentations, essays, critiques, exams, group projects, debates, podcasts, video essays, and thesis work.
Our program develops versatile skills that enhance your employability in today's globalized job market across various sectors.
