The University of Liverpool specializes in popular music studies, being home to the world's pioneering research center in this field - the Institute of Popular Music, founded in 1988. Our newly upgraded facilities now boast cutting-edge recording studios, practice rooms, a gaming research laboratory, and an expansive rehearsal area. Beyond hands-on training, this program emphasizes developing a thorough, analytical understanding of popular music's evolution, cultural significance, and creative processes. Students can choose between performance-based courses, composition, or music technology (all optional), alongside modules examining music history and industry dynamics. Additional electives cover subjects like music psychology and sound design for visual media. The curriculum consistently trains students to analyze popular music through historical, critical, social, and philosophical lenses.
First-year students examine core subjects including the structure of music industries and a comprehensive study of 20th century popular music - analyzing both landmark musical developments and their societal influences.
During second and third years, students narrow their focus to specialized subjects, either dedicating themselves entirely to popular music studies or combining them with complementary disciplines. Advanced performance and technology courses accompany these specialized studies. The final year prioritizes concentrated expertise through major independent projects, which may include academic research, technological innovations, or extended performance showcases.
