This program merges comprehensive historical understanding and refined research abilities from a history degree with deep cultural insights and advanced language proficiency gained through Portuguese studies, a language spoken in nine nations.
You'll engage with two academic departments featuring diverse research specialties, fostering interdisciplinary expertise while exploring connections between both fields. Both departments emphasize the integration of cutting-edge research into teaching, creating a dynamic educational atmosphere.
Your studies will include structured Portuguese language instruction alongside explorations of Lusophone cultures, with elective units spanning literature, cinema, history, philosophy, politics, and visual arts. A year abroad in your third year offers immersion in a Portuguese-speaking environment, where you can examine historical themes within distinct cultural contexts through academic study or professional placements in heritage institutions.
In your final year, you'll undertake an independent research project bridging history and Portuguese studies, incorporating primary sources in Portuguese. This unique combination of historical, linguistic, and cultural knowledge positions you to facilitate cross-cultural dialogue internationally.
Instruction occurs through various formats including lectures, small-group sessions, workshops, and individual supervision. Evaluation methods range from traditional exams and essays to innovative assessments like podcasts, video projects, and collaborative work.
