At the University of Birmingham, our BA History and Philosophy program connects you with leading experts across diverse disciplines as you explore new intellectual frontiers and challenge common assumptions about historical and philosophical studies.

You'll choose from a broad selection of modules designed by our faculty, enabling you to shape your degree around your specific interests. The first year establishes core foundations in Western philosophy, examining both its historical development and current debates. As you progress to your second and final years, you'll specialize in philosophical areas that captivate you, while exploring historical periods from medieval to modern times across global contexts. The curriculum encompasses political, social, cultural, and religious history, along with specialized studies in race and gender histories.

Your academic journey will be supported by exceptional resources including our on-site Cadbury Research Library, housing over 250,000 rare volumes (some from the 1400s) and significant archival collections. You'll learn from top-ranked philosophy scholars - our department achieved the highest national ranking in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework based on Grade Point Average.
