This practice-oriented program emphasizes hands-on teaching experience while building expertise in educational theory and subject-specific knowledge for aspiring secondary art and design educators. The curriculum shapes participants into artist-educators with thorough comprehension of art education frameworks, addressing contemporary priorities like sustainability, technological integration, diverse artistic pedagogies, foundational knowledge approaches, art historical contexts, critical analysis, and essential teaching methodologies including lesson planning and evaluation. Flexible part-time study over two years accommodates professional and personal obligations. What You'll Learn Our Secondary History PGCE program prepares educators with specialized knowledge and instructional techniques for teaching history at the secondary level. The Curriculum Specialist (Secondary History) component examines contemporary theories and research through interactive workshops covering thematic units like The Normans, Crusades, Tudor England, British Imperialism, African Civilizations, Holocaust Studies, and World Conflicts. The curriculum fosters discussions about historical content selection and pedagogical approaches to fundamental concepts including historical interpretation, significance assessment, continuity/change analysis, and causal reasoning. Participants implement these concepts through collaborative lesson design, weekly reflective practice, and teaching demonstrations. This aligns with our Evidence-Informed Curriculum unit, where students contextualize historical knowledge within current educational frameworks. Practical experience includes school placements where trainees progressively develop independent lesson planning and delivery skills through our School Experience 1 module. Participants engage with innovative teaching strategies while mastering classroom management techniques. The subsequent School Experience 2 module further refines these competencies, focusing on instructional adaptation, assessment implementation, and student progress monitoring. The program offers both intensive one-year and extended two-year study options. Career Pathways Graduates qualify for QTS certification, preparing them for rewarding careers as secondary history educators, with many securing positions in regional schools. Beyond QTS, the program awards up to 60 Master's-level credits, creating pathways for advanced study including MA, MSc, MPhil, PhD, and EdD qualifications.
