The Department of History provides specialized postgraduate guidance through globally renowned academics across diverse historical disciplines. Situated in a vibrant city and region steeped in cultural heritage, the department fosters an engaging research environment. Students benefit from exceptional local research facilities, including the library's Special Collections and extensive print archives, complemented by comprehensive digital resources through our database subscriptions.
Our faculty members conduct and oversee research spanning cultural, social, economic, and political history, covering medieval, early modern, and contemporary periods. The department maintains a vibrant research atmosphere, with collaborative projects exploring political culture, migration studies, environmental history, public engagement initiatives, and investigations into visual and material culture in partnership with Art History colleagues.
We advise potential candidates to consult with prospective supervisors prior to application submission, to refine research proposals, evaluate their chosen field's current scholarship, and identify relevant primary sources.
While supporting focused historical inquiries, we particularly welcome interdisciplinary approaches that bridge traditional historical boundaries or connect with other academic fields within the Arts Faculty and wider university community.
