The curriculum introduces progressive methods for transforming and decolonizing global social welfare systems, featuring real-world examples from various regions.What you'll learnOur International Social Welfare and Social Development MA provides foundational theories, methodologies, and practical skills for addressing social welfare in global settings. You'll explore the historical evolution and future directions of international social welfare to comprehend its operational environment. Specifically, you'll examine ethical practice requirements across different nations and cultures in our Comparative Social Welfare and Cultural Competence unit, where you'll analyze varied practice approaches to integrate universal social work principles with local contexts.Additionally, our Humanitarian Aid and NGOs in Crisis Situations core unit develops critical understanding of social welfare's role in disaster response. You'll examine tensions between humanitarian ideals and rights frameworks, power dynamics, international standards (like SPHERE), and crisis communication. The unit also addresses decolonizing humanitarian efforts through greater community involvement and local leadership.The program offers specialized electives. You might study international human rights mechanisms and their practical applications, or investigate social entrepreneurship theories while designing actual projects in our Social Innovation unit. Our Migration, Displacement and Human Trafficking module explores refugee protection systems, asylum policy changes, unaccompanied minors, and trafficking debates.You'll conclude with an Applied Social Sciences Dissertation, conducting independent research on a self-selected topic relevant to your studies. Applicants should have 2.2 honours degree or equivalent in a related subject area. IELTS overall score of 6.0 with minimum 5.5 in each element; TOEFL iBT - Listening: 17, Reading: 18, Speaking: 20, Writing: 17.
