The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program allows you to undertake supervised research on your selected subject and submit a written thesis (usually not exceeding 70,000 words). The MPhil can be finished in 1-3 years for full-time students or within 4 years for part-time study. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) involves more extensive research, culminating in a substantial thesis (typically around 90,000 words) that contributes to academic knowledge. PhD candidates can complete their studies in 2-4 years full-time or up to 6 years part-time.
While enrolled in either the MPhil or PhD programs, you must either reside in the UK or attend in-person supervision meetings at least twice during the first semester and three times in the second semester (totaling a minimum of 5 annual visits, though more are encouraged). Non-compliance may lead to termination of registration. Students will conduct cutting-edge research in their chosen specialization. The Psychology Department offers research opportunities across various fields including social, cognitive, health, clinical, and environmental psychology, as well as cognitive/affective neuroscience. PhD candidates must successfully complete a first-year assessment, typically involving written submissions and an oral examination with evaluators. The PhD culminates with thesis submission and a final oral defense (viva voce).
