Cross-disciplinary research exploring the role of museums, galleries, and collections in shaping culture and society. A Museum Studies PhD enables students to pursue their passion for museums, galleries, heritage, and collections. This interdisciplinary program at Aberdeen allows students to benefit from faculty expertise across diverse fields such as Anthropology, Education, Philosophy, and Politics, while also accessing the university's world-class museum collections.
The Museum Studies PhD is offered both on-campus and through distance learning, requiring candidates to produce original, meaningful contributions to the field. Typically, applicants should hold a Master's degree and preferably have professional museum experience.
Each student's research plan is tailored to their academic interests and developed with supervisory guidance. The culmination of the PhD is a thesis evaluated by two examiners, followed by an oral defense (viva voce examination).
