Boost your bachelor's degree by adding a year-long placement in industry, business, or research settings. Microbiology plays an increasingly vital role across science, healthcare, manufacturing, and society as we work to combat harmful microbes in medical and community settings while harnessing beneficial microorganisms for biotech applications. This field serves as a practical science, advancing healthcare through pathogen research, disease tracking, and antibiotic resistance studies. Microbes also play crucial roles in agriculture, food production, and environmental management, such as in oil spill remediation.
This degree program helps you build expertise in microbiology at molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. You'll then specialize in key microbiology areas that align with our School's research strengths, learning directly from leading experts in these fields.
During your fourth year, you'll complete a 12-month professional placement, graduating after five years with an MSci (an undergraduate Master's degree) rather than a BSc. Placement opportunities vary widely but typically allow you to gain hands-on experience in industrial, commercial, or research environments, significantly boosting your practical skills and career prospects alongside your academic studies.
