The MRes (Master of Research) in Social Science is a one-year postgraduate program focused on building advanced research capabilities in social sciences. This intensive research degree blends specialized and general methodology training, preparing graduates for diverse career paths across public, private, and nonprofit sectors while providing a strong foundation for doctoral studies. The curriculum includes four taught courses (two per semester) followed by a supervised summer research project.
This program holds accreditation under the Economic and Social Research Council's Scottish Doctoral Training Programme (Sociology Pathway). Students can also pursue the Diploma in Social Science Research, consisting of four courses, which qualifies for funding through the Scottish Government's Student Awards Scheme (SAAS).
The MRes curriculum develops methodological expertise and critical analysis skills for sophisticated social science research. Participants master qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques while conducting theory-driven investigations.
Through the dissertation component, students cultivate practical, intellectual, and analytical abilities within their chosen specialization - skills with broad professional applications.
Most courses enable students to practice research methods by applying them to self-selected topics, allowing personalized methodological training aligned with individual academic interests in social sciences.
