The Celtic & Anglo-Saxon Studies Department at Aberdeen stands unique in Scotland, specializing in the literature and culture of early and medieval Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, as well as Normandy, Scandinavia, and Iceland. We engage in interdisciplinary research, working closely with related fields such as Gaelic, Scandinavian Studies, History, and English.

Our key research areas include:

The interplay between Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Classical literature
Divine beings, mythical creatures, and Otherworlds in medieval and contemporary texts
Heroic narratives from Celtic and Germanic traditions
New Testament apocrypha within Celtic and Anglo-Saxon contexts
Parallels between Gaelic and Nordic literary works and folklore
The concept of kingship in Gaelic society
Medieval interpretations of historical and fictional narratives

To apply for this programme must have at least a good Honours degree in a related subject or discipline.
