The one-year Master's in Museum Studies leverages the University's vast museum collections, allowing you to examine critical museum theories while gaining hands-on experience with practical museum work and research.
The University of Aberdeen houses some of the nation's oldest, largest, and most important museum collections, designated as a Recognised Collection of National Significance. Aberdeen stands out as one of the few UK universities with world-class collections spanning both natural and cultural heritage.
This programme extensively utilizes these collections to help you explore museums' historical and modern societal roles, develop skills in public research engagement, and acquire real-world museum experience.
Core courses—Researching Museum Collections, Museum Practice, The Museum Idea, and Navigating the Museum Workplace: Career Portfolio Project—provide essential curatorial training alongside insights into museum history, philosophy, and current challenges.
You can put this learning into practice through elective courses such as Learning and Museums, where you'll create a public engagement initiative, and Museums and the Digital World, which tasks you with designing a digital project for the University Museums and Special Collections.
