Studying Gaelic alongside Spanish and Latin American Studies at Aberdeen offers the perfect chance to deeply explore Scotland's oldest language – whether you're a native speaker or starting from scratch – while also delving into Hispanic culture. You'll have the option to focus on either Latin America or Spain, honing exceptional language abilities that will make you a highly desirable candidate across various professions. For a century, we've been instructing in Scottish Gaelic (Gidhlig) and its traditions, guided by educators and scholars who are deeply committed to the language and whose research actively shapes Scotland's efforts to preserve and promote Gaelic in modern society.
You'll deepen your understanding of Scotland's most ancient living tongue and enhance your Gaelic proficiency in a welcoming setting, with chances to engage with northern Scotland's Gaelic community through clubs, events, and organizations. Our Hispanic Studies program boasts an exceptional reputation, receiving the top rating of Excellent in the most recent national Teaching Quality Assessment. You'll gain proficiency in a global language spoken by 350 million native speakers across 19 Latin American countries, Spain, and increasingly in the US, while also exploring the rich cultures of Spanish-speaking regions.
A key component of your five-year degree includes spending your entire third year abroad in a Spanish-speaking nation, either as a teaching assistant or exchange student, to further develop your language skills.
