Since its establishment in 2003, the Transitional Justice Institute (TJI) has quickly gained global recognition as a premier institution advancing the study of transitional justice - the examination of legal systems in nations transitioning from oppressive regimes or violent conflicts. The TJI fosters scholarly work not only in transitional justice but also in related areas including human rights, gender studies during societal transitions, international public law, and conflict mediation. Under the leadership of Director Professor Rory O'Connell, TJI has achieved notable success, with Ulster's Law program ranking 4th nationwide in the 2014 REF assessment and securing top position for research impact, earning a perfect 'world-leading' rating. This multidisciplinary research hub, while fundamentally legal in orientation, bridges disciplines by collaborating with experts in gender research, peace and conflict analysis, and political science, maintaining strong partnerships with INCORE researchers.
