This program is designed to deliver appropriate academic instruction in bioscience fundamentals for sport and exercise nutrition (SEN) studies. Workplace learning will form a core component, showcasing the diverse professional opportunities in sport and exercise nutrition. Nutrition plays a crucial role in athletic performance, with dietary intake before, during, and after physical activity impacting health, body composition, and both exercise performance and recovery. Optimal nutrition can therefore enhance sports performance.
Greater involvement in physical activity, exercise, and sports also benefits the health of our generally inactive population. Regular exercise can help combat obesity, lower risks of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and osteoporosis, while also supporting mental wellbeing. Proper understanding and implementation of sport and exercise nutrition principles helps maintain a healthy equilibrium between physical activity and diet for individuals and groups across all fitness levels.
This program aims to offer comprehensive academic training in bioscience foundations for SEN studies. It will impart knowledge about sport and exercise nutrition biosciences, develop critical thinking, and provide transferable skills for careers in the broader nutrition and sports sectors. Additionally, it prepares aspiring sports nutrition professionals with essential knowledge before they undertake a one-year MSc program (at Ulster or elsewhere) and pursue practitioner registration as accredited sport and exercise nutritionists.
