Product Design is a studio-focused, practical program that combines design, materials, techniques, and technology to prepare graduates for successful careers. This flexible course caters to students with backgrounds in Art and Design or Technology with Design who aspire to work in product, industrial, or craft-based industries (including ceramics, metalwork, and jewelry), pursue teaching roles, or continue their studies at postgraduate levels. The curriculum offers an engaging, practice-oriented education for designers and makers, centered around a multidisciplinary studio setting with fabrication and prototyping as key components. Students have access to specialized workshops for metal, jewelry, ceramics, and woodworking, along with 3D printing resources.
The program highlights both design (wood/plastic) and craft-based creation (clay/ceramics and metal/fine metal), emphasizing manufacturing, material handling, and the development of prototypes, concepts, and testing as crucial elements of the design process. Modern workshops for metalwork, jewelry, woodcraft, and ceramics provide comprehensive technical support for working with various materials, including specialized techniques for metals and plastics.
Creative practice is enriched by contextual awareness, critical analysis, and reflective writing. Students participate in multidisciplinary, real-world learning through collaborative projects and industry placements, supported by instruction in professional skills, business strategy, and entrepreneurial thinking. The course offers specialized pathways in product design, ceramics, jewelry, and metalsmithing, with options focusing on either design or craft-oriented approaches.
