Over two years (MPhil) or three years (PhD), you'll conduct an independent physical geography research project with guidance from our renowned faculty: Professor Stefan Doerr, a foremost expert on wildfire effects, studies predicting and reducing water contamination risks from wildfire ash. Professor Adrian Luckman gained worldwide attention for his Antarctic Larsen C Ice Shelf research and rift predictions. Professor Siwan Davies investigates the causes of dramatic climate shifts over the past 100,000 years, recently producing a documentary about current climate impacts in Uganda, Costa Rica, and California. Professor Tavi Murray, the first woman honored with the Polar Medal for exceptional polar research contributions, and Professor Peter North, whose NASA-collaborated Amazon climate research received international media coverage. Our active research groups encompass: Environmental Dynamics, Glaciology, Global Environmental Modelling and Earth Observation, Migration, Boundaries and Identity, and Social Theory and Urban Space.
Swansea's Physical Geography PhD program allows you to lead a significant research initiative. This prestigious qualification serves as essential preparation for academic careers while expanding opportunities in education, government, and private sectors. You'll submit an original thesis making substantial contributions to the field, with the PhD conferred after successful oral defense (viva voce).
