Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in History allows you to engage in an extensive research project driven by your personal interests. The full-time PhD program spans three years (six years part-time), while the MPhil requires two years of full-time study (four years part-time). For the PhD, you'll submit a thesis of maximum 100,000 words, compared to 60,000 words for the MPhil, followed by an oral defense (viva voce). Both programs involve original research under faculty supervision, resulting in a thesis that advances historical understanding. Our expertise covers Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern History across British, European, and Global contexts. The department thrives on active research collaboration between staff and students, creating a vibrant academic environment at Swansea. Numerous seminars, conferences, and research events organized by the History Department provide valuable opportunities to enrich your research experience.
