Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Modern Languages allows you to embark on an extensive research project driven by your personal interests. These prestigious degrees can open doors to academic careers or expand job opportunities in sectors like education, government, or private industry. The PhD program spans three years full-time or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time. Candidates submit a thesis of up to 100,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing meaningful contributions to the field. This is followed by an oral defense (viva voce examination). Both programs involve original research under faculty supervision, resulting in a thesis that advances modern language studies. Swansea's Modern Languages department covers Arabic, Mandarin-Chinese, French, German, and Hispanic Studies, with research spanning medieval literature to contemporary European cinema.
Throughout your project, you'll receive close guidance from two expert supervisors, with biweekly meetings initially and scheduled sessions thereafter.
You'll refine essential research skills for advanced work in modern languages, supplemented by campus training programs. Opportunities include presenting your work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
