Over two years (MPhil) or three years (PhD), you'll conduct an advanced mathematics research project under the guidance of our internationally renowned academics. Your work will evolve through active engagement in seminars, workshops, lab sessions, field studies, and collaboration within one of our specialized research teams. Swansea's Mathematics department boasts one of the UK's most prominent probability theory research groups, with particular expertise in stochastic processes, where senior faculty members are globally recognized experts. Our research clusters encompass: Algebra and Topology, focusing on noncommutative geometry, categorical approaches to algebra and topology, homotopy theory, and homological algebra; Analysis and Nonlinear PDEs, specializing in reaction-diffusion systems, fluid dynamics through Navier-Stokes equations; Stochastic Analysis, investigating functional inequalities, Lvy processes, and modeling complex fractal systems; and Mathematical Biology, applying mathematical techniques to pharmacology, plant physiology, cellular dynamics, and cancer research.
Swansea's MPhil in Mathematics allows you to pursue an extensive research initiative driven by your academic passions. This prestigious degree opens doors to academic careers or diverse opportunities in education, government, and industry. The program culminates in a 60,000-word thesis showcasing original findings that advance the field, evaluated through an oral defense (viva voce). You'll develop advanced research capabilities, with additional skills training available through campus programs. The department provides platforms to present your work at academic seminars and conferences, sharing insights with fellow researchers and faculty members.
