Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Ancient History allows you to engage in an extensive research project driven by your personal academic interests. The PhD program spans three years for full-time students or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time. Candidates submit a thesis of up to 100,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing original research that advances the field. This culminates in an oral defense of the thesis (known as a viva voce examination). Both programs involve working at the highest academic level, conducting groundbreaking research related to the history and archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome. Our faculty's expertise ranges from Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations to modern European history. The department thrives on the research contributions of both staff and postgraduate students, creating a vibrant intellectual environment at Swansea.

You'll refine essential research skills for advanced work in ancient history, complemented by campus-based training programs. Opportunities include presenting your work at departmental seminars and postgraduate conferences.
From your second year onward, you may have the chance to lead undergraduate tutorials and seminars, with provided training and compensation. Approved conference attendance and off-site research may also receive financial support.
