The MA by Research in Staging/Screening Europe offers an opportunity to pursue an in-depth project driven by your personal interests. This prestigious degree can open doors to academic careers or enhance job prospects in sectors like education, government, or private industry. The program lasts one year full-time or two years part-time, ideal for those seeking their first research degree or considering advanced studies. You'll produce a 40,000-word thesis showcasing original findings, followed by an oral defense (viva voce). This program is perfect for building expertise in European theater and film, covering areas from Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre to German Expressionism, French Surrealism, and major European filmmakers. Language skills can be developed through projects examining French, Italian, and Spanish romance languages alongside their dramatic and cinematic traditions. Cross-disciplinary supervision is available with American Studies, Creative Writing, English Literature, or Welsh. We especially welcome research on cultural exchanges between Europe and Wales/Britain. Projects may focus on theater, film, or both, developed in consultation with advisors—we encourage preliminary discussions before applying. You'll receive guidance from two expert supervisors, with biweekly meetings initially and regular sessions thereafter. The program hones research skills for advanced work in performance and screen studies, requiring attendance at training workshops. You'll present your work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
