Hull's Film Studies program is an innovative academic department that provides PhD opportunities across diverse areas such as television studies, American film, animation, horror genres, and adaptation research. Our doctoral candidates work closely with distinguished faculty members who are recognized leaders in their specialties. The Film Studies team frequently participates in media appearances and has presented at prestigious venues including the National Film Theatre and academic institutions throughout Europe and North America.
Throughout the academic year, the department organizes ongoing seminars on film and media research, and previously hosted a global symposium commemorating Ealing Studios' 75th anniversary. A £9.5 million upgrade has transformed Middleton Hall into a premier cultural complex featuring cutting-edge cinema technology with immersive audio systems. This investment provides Hull with exceptional facilities, including a surround-sound theater, performance hall, ambisonic recording studio, and professional-grade production spaces. The renovation features a modern lobby and café, with the 400-seat cinema and concert venue as the focal point. This adaptable space perfectly accommodates film viewings, musical performances, and theatrical productions.
