The MA by Research in Applied Linguistics allows you to pursue a personalized research project based on your academic interests without enrolling in a full PhD program. You can complete this program in one year of full-time study or two years part-time. Our faculty members belong to the Language Research Centre (LRC) and particularly welcome research proposals in areas such as: Computer Assisted Language Learning, Cognitive Psychology of Language, Discourse Analysis, Lexical Studies, Pragmatics, Psycholinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, and Vocabulary Learning. While this program serves as excellent preparation for PhD studies, developing independent research skills also enhances career opportunities in English language teaching and non-academic sectors like media, publishing, or government agencies. Your research proposal will be developed in collaboration with supervisors, and we advise initiating these discussions before applying to formulate an initial plan. Throughout your studies, you'll receive guidance from two expert supervisors, with biweekly meetings in your first term followed by regular scheduled sessions. As a research student, you'll participate in skills development workshops and present your work at departmental seminars, the annual postgraduate symposium in June, and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
