The Extended Master of Arts in Professional Translation (MAPT) transforms skilled multilingual speakers into accomplished language professionals. As a member of the European Master's in Translation Network with 64 institutions across Europe, Swansea University stands as Wales' sole representative. This 240-credit program, aligned with Bologna standards, offers flexible study options: full-time completion in 15 to 21 months or part-time over four years, with potential international study during the latter phase. Students engage in high-level translation across one or two language combinations, working with general, administrative, and technical documents while mastering industry-leading Computer-Assisted Translation software. The initial phase provides specialized training in diverse areas including public service interpreting, multimedia translation, automated translation systems, software adaptation, terminology organization, video production, and digital publishing. Through the practical translation module, learners gain real-world experience by collaborating with local agencies and completing professional-grade assignments. The program's concluding phase presents three pathways: producing extensive translations, writing a scholarly thesis, or completing a 13-week placement with domestic or international translation firms.
This career-focused MA substantially improves employment prospects in the translation field, with networking opportunities arising throughout studies or during internships.
Alumni typically secure various translation and interpreting positions, while others progress to research degrees and academic careers.
