The MA in History offers an engaging exploration of diverse historical eras, spanning from medieval times to the present day. Students can delve into British, European, American, or Asian History, guided by Swansea University's team of expert historians. The program also includes specialized modules on art and cultural history, empires, gender studies, political movements, religious developments, sexuality, and scientific progress. With a strong community of historians at Swansea, students gain access to the College of Arts and Humanities Research Centres, the Callaghan Centre for the Study of Conflict, Power and Empires, and the Richard Burton Centre. The curriculum consists of selected 20-credit optional modules, followed by a 60-credit dissertation in the latter half of the program. Course offerings range from historical methodologies and Old English studies to modern Welsh history, maritime heritage, public history, and medieval manuscript analysis. A 20-credit heritage work placement may also be available. Swansea provides exceptional research facilities for postgraduate students, including the University library, the nearby National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, and collaborations with the National Galleries and Museums of Wales. The James Callaghan Building houses dedicated postgraduate spaces, including a common room and digital resource center.
Students will refine valuable skills in research, writing, and oral communication while gaining confidence in articulating their ideas effectively. Graduates from this program pursue careers in education, public service, marketing, and research, with many advancing to doctoral studies and academic professions.
