Our Modern Languages program, which includes a year abroad, allows you to focus on one, two, or three primary languages, connecting you to a worldwide network and creating diverse career opportunities. You'll enhance your French, German, or Spanish proficiency while exploring cultural studies, education, and translation through our specialized pathways.
A highlight of the program is your year overseas, where you can either undertake a paid internship or study at one of our partner universities—an enriching experience that enhances both your academic journey and future job prospects.
Swansea University offers French, German, and Spanish courses for both advanced learners (post-A level) and beginners. If you have A-level qualifications in two of these languages, you can continue studying both at an advanced level. Those with one A-level language can either specialize in that language or add another through our beginner courses. Additionally, introductory modules in Catalan, Italian, and Portuguese are available for students looking to broaden their linguistic skills.

Qualification Requirements
Our standard entry requirement is BBB (UCAS tariff points 120) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32, Welsh Baccalaureate - grade equivalent to A-level, Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above which must include relevant language (French, Spanish, German, Italian). All language applications will be considered on merit.
For applicants whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.0 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test.
