Pursuing a degree in American Studies and Politics means delving into the culture, history, and governance of one of the world's most powerful nations, while also examining British and European political systems, public policy, and philosophical thought. This three-year BA program equips students with versatile skills sought after by employers, paving the way for diverse career opportunities. The curriculum covers American history, literature, and political developments from colonial times through the Trump administration, alongside political subjects ranging from classical philosophy to contemporary warfare. With flexible course options, students can tailor their studies to personal interests, choosing from subjects like American cinema, music, racial and gender studies, urban development, economic and military history, terrorism, civil rights movements, international relations, and political theory. Our teaching draws from cutting-edge research, complemented by guest lectures and seminars. Each student receives guidance from an academic mentor, while the American Studies Student Society hosts engaging social and cultural activities.

Qualification Requirements

Our standard entry requirement is BBB (UCAS tariff points 120) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32, Welsh Baccalaureate - grade equivalent to A-level, Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.


For applicants whose first language is not English, we require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test. TOEFL (IBT) - 79
