The PhD program's main objective is to prepare students to develop, investigate, and complete a doctoral dissertation successfully. Graduates will gain expertise in political research methodologies and become specialists in their chosen area. Prospective candidates must hold a strong master's degree in Politics similar to the Department's MSc program, though applications from those with relevant degrees in related fields will also be reviewed. Research proposal guidelines are available. Admissions occur continuously, with applications accepted from November until June 30 for October enrollment. Those seeking SOAS scholarships or ESRC funding should check the research scholarships page for key dates.
SOAS's PhD program operates on a three-year structure, with an optional fourth-year extension. The first year focuses on research training and coursework, after which candidates must pass an MPhil-to-PhD upgrade via an assessed Upgrade Paper and viva examination. The second year involves primary research/fieldwork, followed by thesis writing in the third year. Students should target submission by their third year's end, with a mandatory deadline by the fourth year's conclusion.
