The MPhil/PhD in Gender Studies offers a distinctive program that merges advanced theoretical approaches in Gender Studies with specialized regional knowledge focused on Africa, Asia, and the Middle East—a hallmark of SOAS. The Centre for Gender Studies encourages prospective researchers to apply for our MPhil/PhD program across all domains of Gender Studies. With an emphasis on developing critical theoretical frameworks and deep regional understanding spanning disciplines, particularly concerning Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, the Centre fosters diverse academic exploration. Faculty and current doctoral candidates engage with an extensive array of theoretical and empirical subjects, enabling broad supervisory possibilities. The Centre supports research students through dedicated Gender Studies training initiatives, complemented by regular seminar series. We particularly welcome applicants interested in gender and sexuality research, including specialized fields such as security studies, legal frameworks, migration and diaspora studies, political activism, queer theory, transgender studies, critical race theory, transnational feminism, queer/trans of color critique, and decolonial thought. Research proposals examining gender and sexuality in relation to Asia, Africa, and/or the Middle East—including their diasporic communities—are strongly encouraged.
