Students demonstrating qualifications suitable for independent research may be eligible for Economics research degrees (MPhil/PhD). Typically, applicants must hold an advanced Masters in Economics or equivalent qualification. In most cases, possessing such an MSc meets all admission criteria without requiring additional coursework or formal examinations.
The Department provides exceptional research training through specialized seminar series and diverse MSc courses. These cover economic theory, development political economy, and address various theoretical, empirical, and policy challenges. Specialized subject options deliver expert knowledge across numerous fields. First-year researchers participate in comprehensive training covering political economy, various methodologies, and fieldwork preparation. Each student's training requirements are individually evaluated and met through available courses and personalized instruction. Faculty members bring extensive supervision experience and a proven track record of guiding students to timely thesis completion. While emphasizing efficient thesis completion, the Department ensures students receive broad training beyond their specific topics, developing skills in analysis, research communication, and critical evaluation. Research students are integrated into the Department's academic community, with opportunities for staff collaboration and some teaching experience.
