The SOAS Centre for Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies (CCLPS) invites MPhil/PhD candidates to pursue research in Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, and Postcolonial Studies. The Centre offers its own specialized MPhil training program, allowing students to register directly with the Centre rather than through regional or disciplinary departments. Focusing on developing theoretical expertise alongside deep regional, linguistic, and cultural understanding—particularly concerning Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as European-language literatures—the Centre provides exceptional research opportunities. Students can explore diverse theoretical and critical topics under the guidance of SOAS's multidisciplinary faculty. Research degrees in these fields typically require three years, extendable to four years if fieldwork or material collection is necessary, with part-time enrollment options available.

Qualification Requirements

We normally require a 2.1 bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) plus a Masters degree in appropriate subject area plus one reference. In exceptional cases we may accept applicants who do not meet these criteria if they show evidence of a strong Masters degree and/or appropriate level of relevant work experience.
The School's minimum entry requirement for applying for the PhD and VRS programmes is a good UK Master's degree (or overseas equivalent), which is generally in a relevant area to the programme you are applying to. In some cases prior knowledge of a language may be necessary or advisable.
Full academic transcripts of your College/University studies to date (with official translations from the institution or provided by a recognised translator if not in English)
An academic transcript is a record of your study undertaken detailing the courses or modules you studied each year, the mark you received for these and the credit value and level of each module.
Copies of official transcripts for all qualifications awarded at a degree level or higher must be uploaded to your online application. These transcripts must detail all marks received throughout the duration of your studies.
Copies of your degree certificates (diplomas) (with official translations from the institution or provided by a recognised translator if not in English).
