The MPhil/PhD program in Near and Middle Eastern Studies offers specialized training in research methodologies and interdisciplinary studies focused on the Near and Middle East, conducted within SOAS's School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.
All candidates initially enroll as MPhil students in their first year. Full-time students can upgrade to PhD status after their first academic year, while part-time students do so following their second year. Each MPhil/PhD candidate receives guidance from a three-member supervisory team, consisting of a primary supervisor (60% commitment), a second supervisor (25%), and a third supervisor (15%). During the first year, students typically have bi-weekly one-hour meetings with their main supervisor, who must belong to the same department as the student. The additional supervisors, offering supplementary advice, may come from the same department or other departments/centers within the Faculty of Languages and Cultures or other SOAS faculties. For certain research projects, joint supervision by two primary supervisors may be arranged, in which case the supervisory committee consists of only one additional member.
