Pursue an MPhil/PhD in Development Studies at SOAS to unlock your ability to address worldwide inequalities and create meaningful change through impactful research. As a doctoral candidate, you'll become part of an internationally recognized, diverse academic community with opportunities for both research and teaching, along with access to an extensive seminar series featuring top development experts. Our department currently hosts 52 research scholars investigating diverse topics across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. We especially welcome applicants interested in aligning with our key research focus areas: Labor, Social Movements and Development; Neoliberalism and Globalization; State Violence, Peacebuilding and Development; Water Resources in Africa; Migration and Development; Agricultural Transformation; Development Policy and Poverty Alleviation. SOAS doctoral candidates benefit from weekly skills workshops, biweekly Development Studies seminars, and specialized professional development sessions.

Qualification Requirements

We normally require a 2.1 bachelor's degree plus a Masters degree with a Merit classification in a Social Science plus one reference. In exceptional cases we may accept applicants who do not meet these criteria if they show evidence of a strong Masters degree and/or appropriate level of relevant work experience.

TOEFL IBT - 95 with 23 in writing, 20 in other subscores
