The China and Inner Asia Department offers guidance for MPhil and PhD candidates pursuing research-based degrees across diverse cultural and linguistic disciplines. Prospective students need not restrict their research topics to those listed under current faculty specialties (recent postgraduate projects have explored varied subjects like color symbolism in classical Chinese literature, Chinese film studies, Braille systems in Chinese, and translation theory). When required, collaborative supervision with SOAS faculty from other departments can be arranged. MPhil and PhD research utilizes literary texts, archival documents, and fieldwork conducted in regional languages. Our graduates hold positions worldwide in academia, government service, media, museums, arts institutions, humanitarian organizations, libraries, healthcare, and various business sectors, with many working directly in their studied regions or cultural domains.
