This program provides foundational knowledge in Cultural Studies theories rooted in Marxism, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Post-Marxism, Feminism, and Post-Modernism, examining their implementation and adaptation across African, Asian, and Middle Eastern cultural landscapes.
It analyzes key Western cultural concepts—including ideology, power, class, identity, race, nation, subjectivity, representation, and memory—while highlighting how scholars from non-Western traditions critique and reinterpret these ideas. The focus is on uncovering diverse cultural histories and memories that shape these regions, requiring Cultural Studies to evolve accordingly.
The curriculum engages with theoretical frameworks addressing class, race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, representation, and religion. Students will explore epistemological and methodological challenges in applying Cultural Studies theories beyond Western contexts. Combining theory with practice, the program utilizes case studies from varied cultural expressions to clarify complex ideas and test their relevance in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The MA in Cultural Studies prepares students to critically assess how these theories function in cross-cultural settings while honing research skills for independent academic projects.
