This MA program stands out as one of the few graduate-level offerings nationwide specializing in the European philosophical tradition. Building on our department's expertise in 19th and 20th-century French and German philosophy, along with Continental political thought, the curriculum emphasizes close reading and interpretation of seminal texts. Students explore the evolution of European philosophy with special focus on Kant's influence and subsequent philosophical developments in Germany and France. The program offers flexibility, enabling students to specialize in European philosophy or combine it with complementary subjects like Human Rights, Continental Aesthetics, or Anglo-American Political Theory.
Royal Holloway takes an innovative approach to philosophy that transcends traditional boundaries between analytic and Continental traditions, fostering interdisciplinary connections across arts, humanities, and social sciences. Our distinctive program brings together faculty from diverse departments including drama, literature, and political philosophy, creating a vibrant intellectual community. Our philosophy instructors are not only passionate educators but also recognized scholars and published experts in their respective fields.
Program Length: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time
