The BA in English & American Literature offers you the chance to study the unique yet interconnected literary traditions of two nations across five centuries, from the early 17th century to modern times. This program draws on the expertise of leading academics in our highly ranked English department.
Your studies will start with foundational courses in both literary traditions, followed by opportunities to explore various periods, genres, and themes through elective modules. In your final year, you'll focus on specialized topics, choosing research-based courses or completing a dissertation.
The program covers diverse aspects of American literature, from early colonial writings to 19th-century works, African-American literature, satire, poetry, drama, urban novels, and musical literature. You'll also have access to an extensive selection of courses in English literature, literary theory, and postcolonial studies.
