Our English literature program offers comprehensive exploration of literary studies, drawing on our specialized knowledge across diverse fields such as American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and interdisciplinary connections with arts, media, and sciences. Students gain privileged access to our exceptional Hunterian and Library collections, renowned for their 18th- and 19th-century holdings, travel literature, illuminated manuscripts, and important single-author archives.
The curriculum begins with poetry studies before transitioning to narrative prose. Throughout the program, students cultivate essential abilities in critical analysis, creative composition, and literary argumentation while discovering how performance and oral interpretation enrich textual understanding. Both courses feature an eclectic selection of works spanning various historical periods and cultural traditions, alongside opportunities to hone creative writing skills in poetry and fiction.
