This Joint Honours program provides a scientific approach to studying human history and the varied environments societies have occupied, with practical opportunities to handle archaeological artifacts and participate in fieldwork.
Archaeology investigates diverse remnants of past civilizations—from objects and structures to entire settlements—analyzing how communities have evolved and adapted. The curriculum covers global, European, and Irish/British archaeological periods from prehistoric eras to contemporary heritage studies. Queen's University Belfast ranks among the UK's top institutions for Archaeology, earning third place for student experience in the 2022 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and maintaining its first-place position for student satisfaction in the 2022 Complete University Guide.
Palaeoecology analyzes environmental data to understand how natural phenomena and human actions have shaped ecosystems and climates over time. Coursework explores topics like ancient habitats, evolutionary processes, and environmental transformations.
Geography examines the relationship between modern societies and their surroundings, including recent historical contexts. Like Archaeology and Palaeoecology, it uniquely bridges the study of both human and physical environmental factors.
