The Institute of Dentistry at Queen Mary boasts a vibrant community of PhD candidates and encourages applications for MPhil, PhD, MRD (MRES) postgraduate programs, as well as visiting research fellowships across all research domains where expert guidance is available. As part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, we stand at the forefront of Oral and Dental sciences globally. During the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) – the UK's benchmark for higher education quality – Queen Mary's Institute of Dentistry was recognized as the premier dental research institution nationwide.
We maintain a commitment to ensuring our dental research remains integral to broader biomedical advancements, fostering strong interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues across the Medical School and wider College. Centre for Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine
This center integrates our strengths in soft tissue and bone research, encompassing Oral Immunology and Microbiology, along with Oral Medicine and Periodontology research groups.
Research focuses include:
- Mechanisms of microbial infection and pathogenicity
- Interactions between microbes and host immune systems
- Antimicrobial compounds derived from natural sources
- Immune responses at mucosal surfaces
- Clinical investigations and genetic influences on oral ulcers

Typically, the minimum entry requirement is an UK upper second class honours degree (2:1). Some Schools/Institutes require a first class honours degree and/or a masters degree. Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, speaking and listening. TOEFL minimum score 92 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
