The School of Arts and Humanities provides options for postgraduate education culminating in a PhD, available through both full-time and part-time programs spanning diverse academic fields. Nottingham Trent University enables students to pursue doctoral research across all its academic departments. Guidance is offered for full-time or part-time candidates, with distance learning possibilities in certain cases.

Our research network will foster, broaden, and assist your investigations within both specialized and interdisciplinary frameworks covering English, History, Communications, Cultural and Media Studies, Museum and Heritage Development, as well as Critical and Creative Writing. Conducting PhD or ProfD research demands distinct skills compared to undergraduate or taught postgraduate programs. While primarily working independently on your research project, we stress the value of consistent consultations with your supervisory panel.

This panel includes a director of studies (typically an expert in your field) along with at least one additional supervisor chosen for their supplementary knowledge, such as relevant research methodologies.

The Doctoral School Team will guide you from your initial inquiry, throughout the application procedure and various degree phases, until your oral defense and eventual graduation. Upon commencing your studies, orientation sessions will familiarize you with the University, help you acclimate, and facilitate connections with fellow researchers.
