The MA Security Studies program presents a chance to engage with cutting-edge debates in security studies while potentially paving the way for PhD research. This program examines both foundational theories in traditional Security Studies and modern perspectives from Critical Security Studies.
Traditional Security Studies primarily investigates state security threats, military strategies, conventional and unconventional warfare, and international power dynamics. Critical Security Studies expands security considerations beyond the state to include individuals, communities, and the global ecosystem, while broadening our conception of security risks. Students will gain expertise in both analytical frameworks, learning to connect worldwide security challenges with their local, national, and regional impacts.
The curriculum enables students to implement theoretical concepts within local security contexts through partnerships with institutions collaborating with our Department. Potential opportunities include working with refugee support organizations, women's advocacy groups, or municipal government bodies to develop specialized research interests.
