This program covers both theoretical and practical aspects of species conservation through diverse teaching methods including lectures, hands-on exercises, and field studies. You'll integrate scientific understanding of animal physiology and behavior with conservation principles, while addressing pressing global issues like habitat destruction and wildlife protection strategies. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in ecological concepts while equipping you with practical skills for wildlife monitoring and habitat management.
Our expansive 200-hectare countryside campus serves as an exceptional outdoor laboratory where you'll apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. Many modules incorporate fieldwork on campus, such as conducting biodiversity surveys. Instruction comes from faculty with extensive backgrounds in conservation work and ecological studies.
The program features multiple immersive field study opportunities, including international trips to South Africa, southern Spain, and Pembrokeshire. These excursions allow you to examine distinctive ecosystems - from African savannas to European mountain ranges and coastal environments.
Additional domestic field trips take you to significant ecological sites across the country. First-year studies include observing native species like red deer and grey seals, along with non-native animals such as Barbary macaques.
Between your second and final year, you can opt for a year-long professional placement in conservation, enabling you to specialize in your area of interest while enhancing career readiness.
